To use the Alexa sleep timer, start playing anything and then say, "Alexa, set a sleep timer for 30 minutes" — Alexa keeps the audio going and fades it out when the timer ends, without any alarm. To play sleep sounds, just ask for what you want: "Alexa, play rain sounds" or "Alexa, play white noise." Combine the two and your Echo will lull you to sleep and then quietly shut itself off. Below is exactly how each feature works, how to layer them, and what to do when a timer refuses to stop.

What the Alexa sleep timer actually does

The sleep timer is different from a regular kitchen timer. A normal timer counts down and then rings to get your attention. A sleep timer counts down and then stops whatever audio is playing — music, a podcast, an audiobook, a radio station, or sleep sounds — with no alarm at the end. That's the whole point: you fall asleep to something, and the Echo turns the audio off for you so it isn't playing all night.

A few things worth knowing about how it behaves:

  • You must have audio playing (or start it in the same request) for a sleep timer to make sense. Alexa applies the timer to the current playback session on that device.
  • It's tied to the specific Echo you spoke to. Setting a sleep timer on your bedroom Echo won't stop audio on a speaker in another room.
  • Some content fades out gently as the timer ends rather than cutting off abruptly, which is easier on light sleepers.
  • A sleep timer and standard timers can run at the same time without interfering — Alexa tracks them separately.
  1. 1Start playing music, a station, or a sleep sound
  2. 2Say “Alexa, set a sleep timer for [X] minutes”
  3. 3Alexa confirms and stops the audio when time runs out

How to set a sleep timer by voice

Voice is the fastest and most reliable way. Once something is playing, try any of these:

  • "Alexa, set a sleep timer for 45 minutes."
  • "Alexa, stop playing in 20 minutes."
  • "Alexa, turn off the music in one hour."

To check what's left, ask "Alexa, how much time is left on my sleep timer?" To change your mind, say "Alexa, cancel the sleep timer." You can also start the sound and the timer together — see the combined command below — which is what most people actually want at bedtime.

Playing sleep sounds on Alexa

Amazon includes a large library of ambient loops you can play for free just by asking. Common requests that work out of the box include:

  • Rain, thunderstorm, and rainforest
  • Ocean waves, babbling brook, and running water
  • White noise, brown noise, and fan sounds
  • Crickets, night sounds, and campfire crackle

Just say "Alexa, play thunderstorm sounds" or "Alexa, play white noise." If you want a bigger catalog or specific mixes, enabling the free Sounds skill (and similar third-party sleep-sound skills) adds more variety and lets you request named tracks. If you're new to adding skills, our walkthrough on enabling and using Alexa Skills covers the process.

Sleep sounds vs. white noise vs. music

These serve slightly different purposes, and the right pick depends on what's keeping you awake.

OptionBest forLoops seamlessly?Needs a timer?
Built-in sleep sounds (rain, ocean)Relaxing, masking mild noiseYes, plays until stoppedOptional — will loop all night otherwise
White / brown noiseBlocking traffic, snoring, hallway noiseYes, continuousOptional; many leave it on all night
Music or playlists (via a streaming service)A personal wind-down routineNo — tracks endRecommended, so it doesn't restart or shuffle

Many people prefer to leave white or brown noise running all night for consistent masking, and reserve the sleep timer for music or podcasts they don't want playing until morning.

Combining sleep sounds and a timer in one command

The most useful trick is to chain both into a single sentence so you never have to speak twice after you're settled in:

  • "Alexa, play rain sounds and set a sleep timer for 30 minutes."
  • "Alexa, play white noise for 45 minutes."

Alexa starts the sound immediately and applies the timer to that playback, then stops it when the countdown ends. Lowering the volume first ("Alexa, set the volume to 3") helps the sound stay in the background rather than jolting you.

Building it into a bedtime Routine

If you want a hands-off ritual, a Routine is the cleanest approach. In the Alexa app, create a Routine triggered by a phrase like "good night" (or a scheduled time) and add actions such as playing a sleep sound, setting the volume, and dimming smart lights. You can pair this with other adaptive behavior — our explainer on Alexa Hunches covers how Alexa can suggest turning things off at night. When the sleep timer or sounds won't stop

The most common complaint is audio that keeps playing after the timer should have ended. Work through these in order:

  1. Confirm you set a sleep timer, not a regular timer. A regular timer rings but never stops your music. Say "Alexa, how much time is left on my sleep timer?" to verify one exists.
  2. Check which device you're talking to. A sleep timer only affects the Echo it was set on. If music is playing across a group, the timer may have applied to a different speaker — relevant if you use multi-room music.
  3. Force it off manually. Say "Alexa, stop" or "Alexa, cancel the sleep timer."
  4. Look at the light ring. A spinning or unusual color can signal a stuck request or connectivity trouble; our guide to Alexa light ring colors decodes what you're seeing.
  5. Restart the Echo. Unplug it for 30 seconds and plug it back in. This clears most one-off glitches without any data loss.

If commands are failing more broadly, the issue may not be the timer at all — see Alexa not responding: the fix.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Alexa sleep timer sound an alarm when it ends?

No. Unlike a standard timer, a sleep timer ends silently — it simply stops the audio that's playing. That's exactly what makes it useful for falling asleep: nothing rings or wakes you.

Can I set a sleep timer for music from Spotify or Amazon Music?

Yes. The sleep timer works on top of whatever is currently playing, including music from linked streaming services, radio skills, and audiobooks. Start the music, then set the sleep timer, or combine both into one request.

Will sleep sounds keep playing all night?

Built-in sleep sounds and white noise loop continuously until you stop them, so they'll run until morning unless you add a sleep timer. If you want them to end on their own, include a duration or a timer in your command.

Can I run a sleep timer and a regular alarm at the same time?

Yes. A sleep timer that stops your music at 11:30 p.m. and a wake-up alarm set for 7 a.m. are independent — Alexa manages them separately, so one won't cancel the other.
