How to Change Alexa's Default Music Service (Spotify, Apple)
To change Alexa's default music service, open the Alexa app, go to More → Settings → Music & Podcasts, tap Default Services, and pick your preferred provider for both music and podcasts. Once set, a plain command like “Alexa, play jazz” routes to that service instead of Amazon Music — no need to say “on Spotify” every time. Before you start: link the service to Alexa
Alexa can only set a service as default if that service is already connected to your Amazon account. Amazon Music is linked automatically. Spotify and Apple Music need to be added once, which involves signing into that provider and granting Alexa permission to control playback.
To link a new service:

Why “play music” still goes to the wrong service
If you set a default but Alexa keeps defaulting to something else, a few common causes explain it. Understanding why saves you from resetting the same setting repeatedly.
- The service isn't fully linked. A dropped or expired connection quietly falls back to Amazon Music. Re-link it from Music & Podcasts settings.
- Subscription lapsed. If your Spotify Premium or Apple Music plan ends, Alexa can't honor on-demand requests and may revert.
- Wrong Amazon account. Defaults are per-account. If your Echo is registered to a different profile than the one you edited, the change won't appear.
- Household profiles. With multiple voice profiles, Alexa may use a different person's default depending on who it recognizes.
- Ambiguous requests. Asking for a station, mood, or activity (“play focus music”) sometimes triggers an Amazon Music station even with another default set, because not every service maps every request type.
