Matter vs Zigbee: What's the Difference & Which Matters?

Here's the short version: Matter and Zigbee aren't really the same kind of thing, which is why comparing them head-to-head can feel confusing. Zigbee is a low-power wireless radio and mesh networking protocol — the actual signal your devices use to talk. Matter is an application-layer standard that defines a common language so devices work across Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, and SmartThings, regardless of the radio underneath. Zigbee moves the bits; Matter agrees on what those bits mean. Understanding that distinction is the key to choosing well.

What Zigbee actually is

Zigbee is a wireless communication standard built on the IEEE 802.15.4 radio, operating mainly in the 2.4 GHz band. It has been around since the mid-2000s and powers a huge share of affordable sensors, bulbs, and switches. Its defining feature is a self-healing mesh: mains-powered devices (like smart plugs and bulbs) relay messages for one another, extending range and routing around dead spots. Battery devices, such as door sensors, sleep most of the time to conserve power and lean on those relays.

The catch is that Zigbee always needs a coordinator — a hub such as a Philips Hue Bridge, an Amazon Echo with a built-in Zigbee radio, or a SmartThings hub. And while Zigbee is technically a standard, in practice manufacturers implemented it inconsistently for years, so a Zigbee bulb from one brand didn't always pair cleanly with another brand's hub. That real-world fragmentation is a big part of why Matter exists.

What Matter actually is

Matter, developed by the Connectivity Standards Alliance (the same group behind Zigbee), is not a radio at all. It's an application layer — a set of rules for how devices describe themselves and respond to commands — that runs on top of IP-based transports: Wi-Fi, Ethernet, and Thread. Because everything speaks IP, a Matter device can be controlled locally on your network and, crucially, shared across multiple ecosystems at once through a feature called multi-admin. Matter's goal isn't better range or lower power — it's interoperability. It tries to solve the problem where a device only worked with one app or required a brand-specific hub. For most low-power Matter devices, the radio doing the work is Thread, which is itself an 802.15.4 mesh much like Zigbee. That overlap is exactly why people mix the two up.

They often work together, not against each other

This is the part that gets lost in "versus" framing. A hub like the Philips Hue Bridge or a SmartThings hub can present its existing Zigbee devices to Matter through a Matter bridge. Your old Zigbee bulbs keep talking Zigbee to the hub, and the hub translates them into Matter so Apple, Google, and Alexa can all see them. Where each one shines

Reasons Zigbee still makes sense

  • Price and selection. Zigbee sensors, plugs, and bulbs are abundant and often cheaper than newer Matter-native gear.
  • Proven low-power mesh. For a house full of battery sensors, Zigbee's efficiency and mature routing are hard to beat.
  • You already own a hub. If you have a Hue Bridge or SmartThings hub, expanding with Zigbee is cheap and reliable — and you can bridge it into Matter later.

Reasons to prefer Matter

  • You use more than one ecosystem. Matter's multi-admin lets one device live in several apps at once.
  • You want to avoid brand lock-in. Buying Matter reduces the risk that a device only works in a single company's app.

Which should you choose?

For most people buying today, the practical answer is: lead with Matter when you have the choice, and don't feel you have to rip out working Zigbee. If you're starting fresh, care about using devices across Apple, Google, and Amazon, or want to future-proof against ecosystem lock-in, a Matter-compatible device is the safer long-term bet. Frequently asked questions

Is Matter replacing Zigbee?

Not directly. Matter is a software standard, while Zigbee is a radio. Matter is more likely to overlap with — and in new devices, favor — Thread as its low-power radio. Zigbee will keep working for years, and Zigbee hubs can bridge their devices into Matter, so the two coexist rather than one simply replacing the other.

Can a Zigbee device become a Matter device?

An individual Zigbee device usually can't be flashed to speak Matter, because Matter needs an IP-based transport that Zigbee doesn't provide. Instead, a hub with a Matter bridge exposes your Zigbee devices to Matter controllers. The device keeps using Zigbee; the hub does the translating.

Does Matter always need the internet?
