How Many Smart Devices Can Your Wi-Fi Handle?
A rough estimate based on typical practical client limits per router class — real capacity varies by model, channel congestion and traffic. Guidance, not a guarantee.
Why routers hit a wall
It's rarely raw bandwidth — smart devices sip data. The limit is the number of simultaneous clients a router juggles on the crowded 2.4GHz band, plus airtime lost to chatty devices. Once you're near that ceiling you get intermittent "device offline" errors that look like faulty gadgets but are really network congestion.
The single biggest fix is moving low-power devices off Wi-Fi entirely onto Thread or Zigbee. See also How many devices can a router handle? and 2.4GHz vs 5GHz.
